Extension ladders should follow the 4:1 rule, extend at least three feet above the landing surface, and be secured whenever possible to prevent movement.

Material selection is equally critical—especially when working around electricity. Fiberglass ladders are non-conductive when clean and dry, making them the safer choice for electrical work or when exposure to live circuits is possible. Aluminum ladders, while lightweight and durable, conduct electricity and significantly increase the risk of electrocution near power sources. Crews should maintain three points of contact while climbing, avoid standing on the top cap of step ladders, and never overreach—climb down and reposition instead.
